“Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it.” These fiery words by Bal Gangadhar Tilak continue to echo through the annals of Indian history, stirring the spirit of patriotism and self-reliance in every Indian heart. Born on July 23, 1856,in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, Tilak was not only a prominent freedom fighter but also a profound social reformer, educator, and philosopher whose legacy still inspires generations.
As we observe the birth anniversary of Lokmanya Tilak, we at Child Help Foundation (CHF) take a moment to honour a man whose vision of an empowered India aligns deeply with our mission of uplifting and empowering the underprivileged.
Beacon of National AwakeningBal Gangadhar Tilak was among the first leaders to infuse nationalism into the public consciousness. At a time when India was shackled by colonial rule and silence, Tilak’s voice roared through newspapers, public gatherings, and the halls of education. Through his publications— Kesari (Marathi) and The Mahratta (English)—he exposed the injustices of British rule and ignited the fire of resistance in common people.
Tilak believed that freedom was not a gift to be begged for but a right to be claimed. His call for Swaraj (self-rule) became a rallying cry that shaped the course of India’s struggle for independence.
Champion of Education and Social Reform
A visionary far ahead of his time, Tilak strongly advocated for education as a tool for national progress. He co-founded the Deccan Education Society to provide quality education rooted in Indian culture and values. This belief—that education can be the catalyst for change—resonates with CHF’s efforts in empowering children through learning, life skills, and digital literacy programs. Inspired by his work, CHF has made an effort to provide education through its Quality Education programme, which has helped 5,17,336 students to date.
Tilak also worked toward the upliftment of society by promoting unity, particularly among Hindus, through public celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi and Shivaji Jayanti, transforming them into platforms for socio-political awakening.
Tilak’s Relevance TodayIn modern India, Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s principles remain as relevant as ever. His call for self-reliance, unity, and courage is especially meaningful in our journey towards inclusive development. At Child Help Foundation, we strive to build an India where every child, regardless of background, has the right to education, health, and dignity—ideals that Tilak deeply believed in.
As we remember his immense contributions, let us also reflect on what we can do to honour his legacy. Whether it is supporting a child's education, promoting women’s health, or advocating for equal opportunities, every action counts towards building the India Tilak once dreamed of.
A Tribute with PurposeOn the birth anniversary of Bal Gangadhar Tilak, let us not only pay tribute to a fearless patriot but also pledge to carry forward his mission of nation-building. May his words continue to guide us, and may his life remind us that change begins with courage, compassion, and commitment.
