World Mental Health Day 2025: Prioritising Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies

Every year on October 10, the world comes together to observe World Mental Health Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of mental well-being and advocating for better mental health support. In 2025, the official theme is “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,” highlighting an urgent yet often overlooked issue: how mental health services are impacted during times of crises, disasters, and emergencies.

Mental health is an essential component of overall well-being. It influences how individuals think, feel, and act, shapes relationships, and impacts how we cope with life’s challenges. Unfortunately, catastrophes, whether natural disasters, health emergencies, or social crises, can exacerbate stress, anxiety, and trauma, particularly for children and vulnerable communities. The lack of access to mental health services during such times can have long-term consequences, affecting education, social development, and overall quality of life.

At Child Help Foundation (CHF), we understand that addressing mental health is not just about responding to crises; it is about building resilience, awareness, and support systems within communities. Over the years, CHF has conducted multiple awareness sessions in schools and community centres across India, focusing on children and adolescents. These sessions educate young minds about recognising emotions, seeking help, and supporting peers, while also reducing the stigma surrounding mental health. Through interactive discussions, activities, and counselling support, we aim to empower children and communities to prioritise their mental well-being, even in challenging circumstances.

The 2025 theme highlights a critical reality: during catastrophes and emergencies, mental health services are often disrupted when they are needed most. Children, in particular, are susceptible to trauma in such situations, yet mental health infrastructure usually falls short. Ensuring timely access to counselling, therapy, and psychosocial support is essential for recovery and resilience. Moreover, raising awareness among educators, parents, and community leaders plays a pivotal role in creating supportive environments that can mitigate long-term psychological impacts.

By highlighting the importance of mental health access during emergencies, this World Mental Health Day reminds us that mental health is not a luxury; it is a necessity. At CHF, we are committed to not only creating awareness but also advocating for accessible mental health services in schools and communities across India. Every child deserves the opportunity to feel safe, heard, and supported, irrespective of the circumstances around them.

As we observe World Mental Health Day 2025, let us pledge to prioritise mental well-being, strengthen community support systems, and ensure that mental health services reach those who need them the most, especially in times of catastrophe and uncertainty. Together, we can build a future where mental health is valued, accessible, and integral to a healthy, thriving society.
