World Students' Day: Beyond Books and Blackboards

Somewhere in India tonight, a child will finish their homework by the light of a single bulb, sharing one textbook between two siblings because that is all the family could afford this year. In another part of the country, a student will walk nearly an hour each way to reach a school that still does not have enough chairs for every child to sit on. These are not rare stories. For millions of children, this is simply what getting an education looks like.

This October 15, India observes World Students' Day, marking the birth anniversary of Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, a scientist who rose to become President, yet always considered himself a teacher first. Dr Kalam believed that a child given the right environment could achieve almost anything, not because of talent alone, but because someone, somewhere, chose to make that environment possible. "A dream is not that which you see while sleeping; it is something that does not let you sleep," he once said, a belief in a child's potential that quietly disappears the moment support is reduced to just books and fees.

Real support looks very different once you see it up close. Child Help Foundation, an education NGO working in children's education across India, has reached 5,47,908 children as of March 2026 through its Quality Education programme. Behind that number sit children like the ones above, still waiting for someone to notice exactly what they are up against.

The experience can also affect siblings. When a child requires frequent medical attention, parents may understandably have to devote much of their time and energy to the child receiving treatment. Siblings may miss their brother or sister, worry about their health, or experience feelings of loneliness or uncertainty. They too need reassurance, attention, and age-appropriate explanations. Including siblings in conversations and family activities can help them feel secure and connected during a challenging period.

Here is what that support actually looks like, up close.

🎓 Scholarships that keep a door open For many children, the only thing standing between them and a classroom is money their family simply does not have. Our individual and group scholarships exist to close that exact gap, quietly, consistently, year after year, because no child should lose their seat in school over something they had no control over. This is part of what NGOs working for child education in India do every single day, often without anyone noticing.

🚀 STEM Labs and Science Centres that turn curiosity into confidence

Through our STEM Labs and Science Centres, children do not just read about science, they build it, test it, question it, and sometimes fail at it, which is exactly how real learning happens. For many of these children, it is the first time they have been handed the tools to create something themselves.

🚲 Bicycles that turn long walks into possibility

For some children, getting to school means walking several kilometres each way, an exhausting routine that wears them down before the school day even begins. Through our bicycle distribution initiative, that same distance now takes a fraction of the time and energy, and in many cases, these distributions are bundled with school essential kits too: bags, notebooks, crayons, everything a child needs to walk into a classroom ready rather than running on empty.

☀️ Solar lamps that keep learning going

For many children, studying after sunset simply is not possible, no electricity at home means no light to read or write by once the day ends. We distribute solar lamps to children in families without reliable access to electricity, so something as basic as finishing homework does not depend on whether the lights stay on.

🛡️ POCSO awareness sessions that break the silence

These sessions give children the language to recognise what is not okay, and give schools the confidence to talk about it openly instead of looking away. For a lot of children, this is the first time anyone has ever asked if they were safe.

💙 A School Health Programme that finally asks "are you okay?"

Through our School Health Programme, children in several schools now have access to counselling, often for the very first time. Some of the heaviest things a child carries are the ones nobody ever asks about, and this programme exists to change that, one conversation at a time.

🤝 ARSH sessions that replace confusion with clarity

Our Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health sessions walk young people through the changes of adolescence honestly, so questions they were once too embarrassed to ask finally get real answers.

🪑 Infrastructure support that makes showing up possible

Tables, chairs, teaching material, none of it photographs well, but ask any teacher running a classroom without enough seating, and they will tell you exactly how much it changes a child's day. As an NGO for children in India, this is also part of the job, the parts that rarely make it into a photo.

Apart from these, several other initiatives quietly work towards the same goal, making sure a student's circumstances never become the reason they fall behind. This is the work of a child welfare NGO in India that happens between the headlines, the steady, everyday effort of standing by children so their future is not decided by what they were born into.

Dr Kalam once said that a dream, once it takes root, does not let a person rest until it is lived. For the children studying by a single bulb, walking long distances just to reach a classroom, or simply hoping someone notices they exist, that dream is no different from any other child's. It only asks for a fair chance to be chased.

This World Students' Day, look beyond the books and the blackboards for a moment, and really see the students still waiting for the support they actually need, the resources, the safety, the care that lets them simply be students. If their story moved you even a little, consider supporting us by donating to a child's education today, because somewhere, a child's dream is still waiting for the one thing that could make it possible.
